Staff Biography

A longtime resident of Washington, D.C. and, more recently, Palo Alto, CA, Kathy and her husband moved in 2002 to the Central Coast to be closer to one of their daughters, a lecturer in Cal Poly's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, and three of their six grandchildren. Ready to take a break from the rigors of her previous career in high-tech human resources management, but not yet ready to retire, Kathy sought a position with Cal Poly, one of the largest employers in the area. The position in the LA department was appealing because it was different from any of her previous work experience (being in higher education) and involved an artistic discipline.

Kathy's previous experience is long and diverse, beginning at the university level. While her schooling began at Georgetown as a language major, Kathy soon realized her interests were elsewhere, and completed her bachelor's degree in business at the University of Maryland. She served as a Peace Corps staff member, and then as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador. Back from the Peace Corps, she worked as a recruiter for Project HOPE, a hospital ship teaching and treating people in underdeveloped nations. From Project HOPE in Washington,D.C., she made her way to Varian, a high-tech company in Palo Alto, and built her skills and abilities in Human Resources. Before moving to the Central Coast, Kathy was senior human resources director for a division of Philips Electronics, where she managed compensation, benefits, payroll, and HR information systems administration.

Outside the office, Kathy enjoys running on the beach, and "competing" in 10Ks and half marathons. She also loves to garden. At the office, she particularly enjoys assisting students and faculty, problem solving, data analysis, and cutting through "red tape."
